As people become more disconnected from one another in our new Digital Age, the Theology of Communication is truly an essential teaching for our times. We need creative and innovative methods to communicate the Faith to a distracted world.

For instance, what would Jesus, the Great Communicator (a title also attributed to John Paul II) teach us about His principles of communication? How do these principles apply to our own use of communications as a priest, deacon, parish minister, Bible study leader, journalist, media professional, communications director, teacher, parent, or spouse?

This effective resource answers these questions and more, making it an invaluable tool for greater effectiveness in our pastoral and apostolic efforts.

Dr. Christine Mugridge, co-author of John Paul II: Development of a Theology of Communication, presents His Holiness Benedict XVI a copy of the book.

Key topics covered include:
  • How Christ is the Model Communicator and the defining strategy for all communications because He is the Word made Flesh
  • How a Christo-centric approach to communications is modeled in Scripture
  • Secular communications principles and how John Paul II interpreted those in light of the moral standards established by Our Lord
  • The Magisterium’s approach to social communications throughout history
  • The development of the Church’s teaching on communications in light of its mission to preach the Gospel “to the ends of the earth”
  • John Paul II’s communicative strategy for this mission
  • How the Church can help those who communicate for a living achieve excellence in the various aspects of their field
  • What is meant by a “Theology of Communication”
  • How communication leads to communion
  • Why communications are crucial for the New Evangelization
  • A communications plan for the New Evangelization

What the experts are saying…

Testimonials from Cardinals, communicators, priests and professors

“This book is substantial. It is accurate. The sources are the Church’s. So, yes, this work is solid. I support it.”

~ Georges Marie Martin Cardinal Cottier, OP
Former chief theologian of the Pontifical Household

“For those involved in communicating the message of Christ, it is most helpful to have a profound Theology of Communication. It is hoped that this study will be helpful to teachers and students of communications so that their efforts may not only be technically excellent, but spiritually profound and engaging.”

~ John Cardinal Foley
Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem
President emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications

“Is there such a thing as a ‘theology of communication?’ To any Catholic journalist or broadcaster, the concept must be an intriguing one. As in past centuries, the Church will be at the forefront of creative and beautiful ways to communicate the truth. To see this as a ‘theology of communication’ is to look at things from a fresh and inspiring angle. Dr. Mugridge and Sr. Marie draw special attention to the innovative communicative skills of Pope John Paul II and his insights into the human needs involved. Their work is a new approach to a richer significance in the concept of human communication and a benefit to evangelization.”

~ Joanna Bogle
International author, journalist, and broadcaster, and writer of the “Auntie Joanna” blog

“Realizing the importance of having a clear theology for communications in the Church, the authors embark on a major task – to frame the spirit of the late Pontiff’s involvement in communications and media, in theology. The work is indeed a major contribution to the field of the on-going dialogue between theology and communications. A must-read for theologians and communicators alike and a text book for those studying pastoral communications.”

~ Fr. Jacob Srampickal, SJ
Director, Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Communications
Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome
