He obtained a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1964 and was ordained a Bishop in 1985. Cardinal Rigali is a member of the Vatican Congregation for Bishops, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and is currently the Chairman of the USCCB Committee for Pro-Life Activities.
